Review: Denton Little's Death Date by Lance Rubin

About

Denton Little’s Deathdate takes place in a world exactly like our own except that everyone knows the day on which they will die. For Denton, that’s in just two days—the day of his senior prom. Despite his early deathdate, Denton has always wanted to live a normal life, but his final days are filled with dramatic firsts. First hangover. First love triangle. His anxiety builds when he discovers a strange purple rash making its way up his body. Is this what will kill him? And then a strange man shows up at his funeral, claiming to have known Denton’s long-deceased mother, and warning him to beware of suspicious government characters. . . . Suddenly Denton’s life is filled with mysterious questions and precious little time to find the answers. Debut author Lance Rubin takes us on a fast, furious, and outrageously funny ride through the last hours of a teenager’s life as he searches for love, meaning, answers, and (just maybe) a way to live on.

Review

This is the story of Denton Little, a teenage boy whose deathdate falls on the day of senior prom. Denton is funny real and even though this book is technically about death I always found myself laughing.

I loved how this book seemed to be in this generation but a different one at the same time. It was like taking the bare bones of dystopian and putting a fresh outlook on it for something new and exciting. The plot wasn't The Hunger Games or Divergent, it was witty while still having a sci-fi fantasy element. Like urban fantasy with a twist! I also felt liked how Denton had a nice outlook on knowing when he was going to die. He just wanted to be a normal kid and I really liked how that affected his last two days on earth. Like when Denton made his self-eoulgy speech it had some deep thoughts while still being hiloarously, hilaurous! (is that proper grammar?) I felt like that was this book. It had a greater meaning that came across in a ligt and funny sorta way.

Even though the story was light as air and funny it still handled topics like death and its affect on others. This book somehow put humor and death together. (HOW?) If this book could tell me one it's appreciating what you have becuase some day it'll all be gone.

I also liked how Denton had realsict relationships with his friends. Like "Pow's" relationship with Denton could have been two best friends in the real world(ick..who likes the real world?) And I also liked the family's relationship. They loved each other but even the day before you die your family can still annoy you. (inspired by Denton's words.)

I thought the writing style was gritty and raw in a good way. Like a diary of sorts. I liked the writing style in this context.

Overall, I liked this book even with the book's odd sweetness, weirdness and peculiar yet hiloariosly funny humor!

Ps. I got to meet the author and he's really nice!
