Review: These Broken Stars By Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone. Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they're worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

These Broken Stars was unique and filled with action, suspense, plot twists and so much more amazingness that didn't happen too slow or too fast! There are not many young adult space opera books so this book filled in that gap and it did an AMAZING job! (can I add 50000000 more exclamation points?)

These Broken Stars was split up into two points of views Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen:

Lilac LaRoux was the most realistic character in this whole entire book. She reacted exactly the way anyone would in this situation (well, maybe not anyone because she reacted better than I would have!) she was scared but determined and stubborn in the best way possible! (I mean I could not travel across a foreign PLANET in a dress and broken heels!) Lilac also developed so much as a character throughout the book and it was really interesting to see how!

Tarver Merendsen, our other POV was also very realistic but he didn't really develop very much as a character. He was very chivalrous and always tried to keep him and Lilac alive which I loved and thought worked with his character very well! Although he was sometimes, a little too perfect, it wasn't annoying or toke away from the story!

The romance, I felt was a little unnecessary but it worked and was realistic enough. Although, I do wish that Lilac and Tarver could have stayed friends, the romance wasn't rushed or ridiculous.

The writing style was hard, at first, to get into but once you did it was really spectacular and perfect for this book! It was lush and vivid while still making emotions real and clear. Not only that but this book included a medley of beautiful quotes and lines that added to the fabulous experience of the reading this book!

For example:

“But who names a starship the Icarus? What kind of man possess that much hubris, that he dares it to fall?”

Some quotes were just really funny and make me smile every single time:

“It’s raining,” I say, voice hoarse from sleep. I clear my throat and try again. “It’s fine. Straight from the clouds to you.” She frowns, still huddling over and trying to shelter from it. “Straight from the clouds? Is that hygienic?”
